Vampire Cactus is a unique cactus which features both succulent leaves and sharp spines. An old Ecuadorian myth is said that the cactus obtained its succulent leaves as the result of draining nearby plants and succulents during a time of extreme drought. Their succulent leaves also clusters at the top of its head with occasional white filament like growth which adds to its uniqueness.
As a young plant they are slow growers, but when larger and mature, they grow fast and vertically with heights of 13 ft tall in the wild. Some refer to them as a “tree like cactus” due to their tall stature. The flowers they bloom are red and large in size only in the spring and summer seasons.
This is a hardy cactus that is very easy to care for. Water them once approx every 2 weeks and provide them a good mix of part and full sunlight after watering.
